Cloud Computing

This is an excellent post from Derek Wenmouth and clearly outlines the benefits in schools adopting “Cloud Computing”.  In essense this means using online applications / technologies.  Google applications are one example of how this works.  Another potentially powerful tool is WikiEducator.  Both these technologies enable anywhere, anytime collaboration.

The Google suite is one of my favourites sets of tools.  I use Google docs with my students and sometimes with other teachers, Google Groups to facilitate discussion and sharing with the Gifted and Talented Teachers across the cluster, and I use Google Calendar to organise our teacher meetings (of which there are many).  What’s more this is all free.  Taking it one step further, is Google Education, which allows schools to have these tools available “in house” (but hosted by Google of course).

One of Cantatech’s goals is to enable collaboration between teachers across the cluster.  Online technologies make this easy.  The real challenge comes in changing teachers’ mindsets…
